Montfort Missionaries Jubilee: Anglophone Africa Delegation
BALAKA, Malawi - On the 1st of August, 2026, the General delegation of Anglophone Africa celebrated the 125th anniversary of the presence of the Montfort Missionaries in Malawi. It was in 1901 when the first three Montfort Missionaries, (Fr. Pierre BOURGET SMM, Fr. Anton WINNEN SMM and Fr. Auguste PREZEAU SMM) arrived in Malawi.
During the same celebration, the confreres of the General delegation of Anglophone Africa were also celebrating the 25th anniversary of their establishment since 2001 and one confrere, Deacon Filex NIMANYA, SMM a Ugandan, got ordained as a deacon. The occasion was graced by the presence of the Superior General of the Montfort Missionaries, Father Yosef Putra Dwi Darma WATUN, SMM; the General Councillor, Fr. Paul Lonely MASHONGA SMM; the Provincial of the Dutch Province, Fr. Charles LETA SMM; the Delegate Superior for the General delegation of Belgium, Fr. Ghislain KASEREKA SMM; the Delegate Superior of Anglophone Africa, Fr. Jacob OTIENO SMM; Fr Hugh GILLESPIE SMM who facilitated the one week retreat in preparation for this Jubilee, among other Montfortians. The Mass was led by Bishop Montfort SITIMA, the local ordinary of Mangochi diocese who was joined by Archbishop Thomas Luke MSUSA, SMM of Blantyre Archdiocese, Bishop Peter Adrian CHIFUKWA of Dedza diocese, Bishop Alfred Mateyu CHAIMA of Zomba diocese and Bishop Emeritus Alessandro PAGANI SMM, the emeritus bishop of Mangochi diocese.
In his sermon, Bishop Montfort SITIMA highlighted on the need to always take our different ministries seriously, in our various vocations as the clergy, religious and lay faithful. He further encouraged the Montfort missionaries to remain united and never to forget where they have come from, that is, going back to the roots, learning from the first pioneer Montfort Missionaries to Malawi, Fathers Pierre SMM, Anton SMM and Auguste SMM, who dedicated themselves on the Church’s mission despite the many challenges they faced in their mission.
After the Holy Eucharistic celebration, the meal was shared and different activities took place to spice up the celebration.
