PRAYER

Rosary

In communion with Mary, let us meditate on the emotions that Jesus experienced during his passion.

The treachery of Judas: “Jesus was troubled in spirit and declared, ‘Very truly, I tell you, one of you will betray me’. The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he was speaking” (Jn 13:21-22).

The agony in the garden: “Jesus began to be distressed and agitated. And he said to his disciples, ‘I am deeply grieved, even to death’” (Mk 14:34).

The mocking: “The men who were holding Jesus began to mock him and beat him; they also blindfolded him and kept asking him, ‘Prophesy! Who is it that struck you?’ They kept heaping many other insults on him” (Lk 22:63-65).

The abandonment: “When it was noon darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. At three o’clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice, ‘Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?’ which means, ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’” (Mk 15:33-34).

Mary at the foot of the cross: “Even his Blessed Mother’s presence added painfully to his sufferings for, as he was dying, he saw her standing at the foot of the cross engulfed in a sea of sorrow” (LEW 160).

Concluding Prayer

  • “Disturb us”, a prayer attributed to Sir Francis Drake, an adventurer, who wrote it as he departed to the west coast of South America, in 1577.

Disturb us, Lord, when we are too pleased with ourselves; when our dreams have come true because we dreamed too little; when we arrived safely because we sailed too close to the shore. Disturb us, Lord, when with the abundance of things we possess we have lost our thirst for the waters of life; having fallen in love with life, we have ceased to dream of eternity; and in our efforts to build a new earth, we have allowed our vision of the new Heaven to dim. Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly, to venture on wider seas where storms will show your mastery; where losing sight of land, we shall find the stars. We ask you to push back the horizons of our hopes, and to push back the future in strength, courage, hope and love. Amen!
