2.3 Prayer

STAGE 2: Awareness of Self

MY SEXUALITY
SUSTAINING PASSION

PRAYER

Rosary

Let us meditate on the beatitude of the “pure in heart” or “single-hearted” (cf. Mt 5:8), as experienced by Mary.

Mary’s life orientation: Mary is single-hearted in her life orientation. “I am a virgin” (Lk 1:34).

Mary’s relationship with God: Mary is single-hearted in her essential relationship with God. “I am the servant of the Lord” (Lk 1:38a).

Mary’s spiritual formation: Mary is single-hearted in her spiritual formation. “She treasured all things – the events of her life in relationship with Jesus – and pondered them in her heart” (Lk 2:19.51).

Mary’s mission: Mary is single-hearted in her mission. She said to the angel: “Let it be done with me according to your word” (Lk 1:38b). She said to the servants at Cana: “Do whatever he tells you” (Jn 2:5).

Mary is one with Christ and does only the work of Christ. At Cana as well as at Calvary Jesus addresses her with the title of “Woman” (cf. Gen 2:23) because she is his “intimate helpmate” in the work of salvation.

Concluding Prayer

  • “Sub Tuum Praesidium”, the oldest preserved extant hymn to the Blessed Virgin Mary, dating to approximately 250.
Latin
Sub tuum praesidium
confugimus,
Sancta Dei Genetrix.
Nostras deprecationes
ne despicias
in necessitatibus nostris,
sed a periculis cunctis
libera nos semper,
Virgo gloriosa et benedicta.

English
We fly to Thy protection,
O Holy Mother of God;
Do not despise our petitions
in our necessities,
but deliver us always
from all dangers,
O Glorious and
Blessed Virgin. Amen!
