Fr. Gerard LEMIRE
Superior General (1981 – 1993)

Born in Montreal (Canada) in 1930
Entered the Congregation in 1951
Ordained priest in 1957
Elected Superior general in 1981 at the age of 51, until 1993
Superior general for 2 terms of 6 years

He had been the Provincial of Canada. He brought to a conclusion the revision of the Constitutions which were approved by the Holy See in 1984: they are preceded by the Triptych which forms an integral part of them. Although there was the opening of a foundation in the Philippines, the main thrust was rather on the strengthening of what already existed, especially in the area of formation. In 1987, he was re-elected for a second term. It was during this Chapter that there came about the formulation of the four criteria which express the Montfortian mission: Evangelisation, Mary, Availability, Working together. The Sharing Fund was established. Fr. Lemire set the ball rolling for the Dictionary of Montfortian Spirituality, a scheme which would be brought to its conclusion a few months after the end of his term of office, and which was translated into several languages. By necessity and also by conviction, the congregation was opening up to a greater international collaboration. Before the end of his term of office, Fr. Lemire presided, in Rome and in France, at the celebration of the beatification of Mother Marie Louise of Jesus.

P. Gerard LEMIRE
