T. R. P. Louis-Joseph DALIN

Fr. Louis-Joseph DALIN
Superior General (1841 – 1856)

Born in Les Herbiers in 1800
Ordained priest in 1825
Entered the Congregation in 1837
Elected Superior general in 1841 at the age of 41
Superior general for 15 years
Resigned in 1856. A little later, left the Congregation
Died in 1884 aged 84 and was buried in La Flocellière

He was born in Les Herbiers, not far from Saint-Laurent, in 1800. Professor of the Luçon Diocesan Seminary, he joined the Congregation in, making his vows in 1837. On the death of Father Deshayes, he was chosen as his successor in January 1842. A few months later the manuscript of the Treatise on True Devotion was found, and the first edition was printed the following year. Fr. Dalin recognised the manuscript from having long been familiar with the other writings of the Founder, which he had used in writing his biography of Montfort in 1839. The great development of the Congregation led him to put up new buildings at Saint-Laurent between the old house and the street, with the new church in the centre, consecrated in 1855. That same year saw the first foundations outside Saint-Laurent: Angoulême, Orléans and Tourcoing. He made two journeys to Rome to push the Cause for Beatification, but without much success. It was only in 1853 that approval of the writings was given. At the same time, he obtained the approval of the Congregation, which from that time on could be called the Company of Mary. On his return journey he made a pilgrimage, like Montfort and Father Deshayes before him, to Loreto. As a result of some internal problems and at the behest of an Apostolic Visitor, Fr. Dalin resigned the office of Superior General in 1856, and a short time later left the Congregation. He was parish-priest of La Flocellière until his death in 1884.

P. Louis-Joseph DALIN
