T. R. P. Marcel GENDROT

Fr. Marcel GENDROT
Superior General (1969 – 1981)

Born in Quédillac (France) in 1921
Entered the Congregation in 1940
Ordained priest in 1946
Elected Superior general in 1969 at the age of 48, until 1981
Superior general for 2 terms of 6 years

He was elected for a 6-year term in the first session of the special Chapter of 1969. He had already been living in Rome for several years as Procurator General and Assistant. In those days the world was compared to a planetary village, and Fr. Gendrot set himself to visit all the corners of the earth where Montfortians were working. Despite a rapid decline in the number of religious, there were various openings: India, Ecuador, Uganda. In 1969, Haiti and Belgium were raised to the status of Provinces. With the acquisition of the Maison Natale of St Louis Marie de Montfort, there began the pilgrimages "in the footsteps of Montfort". There was a continuing deepening of knowledge of the Works of Fr. de Montfort, thanks to various publications and studies. In 1975 Fr. Gendrot was re-elected Superior General. The congregation had been entrusted to his care at a very delicate and difficult moment of ecclesial transformation: the Council had put all sectors into a situation of reform, experimentation and renewal. The Rule had to be re-worked. There was a tendency to transform the congregation into a confederation of autonomous provinces, a veritable Montfortian "archipelago". The Superior General supported the renewal of the congregation while clinging firmly to the qualities of fidelity and internal unity, his gaze firmly fixed on the future with an expansion towards possible new entities, some of which have indeed seen the light of day (Australia, Poland, Uganda, India, Croatia, the Philippines).

P. Marcel GENDROT
